European Political Parties EXPLAINED

Multi-party systems are confusing, so here's a quick guide to the main political parties in European politics. For Americans it can be especially challenging to understand European politics, as they're so used to the Democrats and Republicans dominating the scene. Hopefully this explains the basics well enough, so you can get started on your deep dive into whatever political topic you want to r...

I think you’ve perfectly captured my views with the Transatlantic segment. I wish us Europeans, especially those on the internet, got over this superiority complex over Americans. Particularly here in Germany. The U.S. has its fair share of problems, no doubt, and there’s nothing wrong with pointing them out, but it’s become annoying and ignorant. The U.S. has done a lot to help us Germans in the decades since the war, and I find the principles of the United States, like those found in their Declaration of Independence and Constitution, admirable, seeing as how we share many of them. America is our ally and it’s best we keep it that way. Great video, Lucas. Glad to see you posting again.

Thank you so much! 🤗 And while I wouldn't describe myself as a full-fledged Transatlantic, I tend to agree. This Anti-Americanism by Europeans is very annoying. There's this saying... idk, by who or what they were referring to specifically, but the saying goes something like: Americans are benevolently misinformed about the rest of the world, while the rest of the world is maliciously well-informed about America. As in: People from places like Germany know a lot of details about the severe downsides of the US. But those same people are often super uninformed about our own domestic policies? Like, they can rage against specific gun laws in the United States, but they have no idea about German problems. That leads to a bit of a distorted image I think. One that paints America as an absolute hellscape.

36:12 I mean, I DO understand the reasoning behind them. When my family migrated here, they were coming for the money. And then, when I was born here and went to school, I felt really uncomfortable in half of the history lessons, because I always felt like I did something wrongdoers that I should be ashamed to be born here. It has reached a point, where I don’t even want to say anything good about Germany, mainly because my class calls me a Neo-Nazi, because I’m always protecting Germany (outside of WW2 obviously). Maybe that’s why Germans are so depressed? Anyway, this has reached a point where I seriously consider if I wanna raise my family here, because on Hand, my children will have a wealthy life and have more opportunities but on the other hand I don’t want my children to be shamed for something they have no control over. They don’t choose where they were born. Neither did I

    • @LucasBenderChannel

Everybody who preaches that following generations should feel guilty, doesn't get the point. It's not about guilt. Guilt cannot be inherited. The only thing we should uphold is a certain responsibility, to educate and to keep the memory to these atrocities alive and easy to access. So I'm sad to hear that you've had people convey a sense of shame and guilt to you, when that should not be the case. I think for the most part, we're already getting there. I think Germany is learning to treat this issue in a more healthy way every year so I think I would tell you: Don't worry. The sense of guilt is receding. I just hope that we can decrease the shame while not loosing the memory... or even worse: start to worship the past again. I hope that doesn't happen as a result. :/

For the ethnic vote, it should also be considered that Germany is fairly homogenous in comparison to countries like the US or Canada where it is more common to court minority voters. To put it this, Germany is a larger portion ethnically German than the US or Canada are white as a whole, and in comparison to the US, it's by a wide margin. As well as that, the ethnicities of the migrants to Germany are of a wide mix, whereas the minority vote in the US is largely centered around latinos and African-Americans (by that I particularly mean those who claim heritage from former US slaves, rather than those who have since immigrated from Africa). As a whole, those two groups make up nearly a third of US citizens, and considering how US elections work and the fact that these people of these groups tend in a few particular areas, they can become very important to court. In Canada, you see a similarly large minority population, though theirs is more heavily centered on people of Indian and Asian heritage. As an aside I really disagree with saying Germany doesn't have many major cities. That is a country the size of the average US state, most states in the US have, at most one major city (0 if you choose not to count state capitals). In fact, only two states have more than one city with more than one million people (being, naturally, Texas and California).

In South Korea, KBS, the public sponsored broadcasting system is notorious for being a dog of the president's political tendency. @LucasBenderChannel 4 дні тому

Aw thank you! And interesting comment! So does their allegiance flip everytime another president occupies the blue house? 😅 Many Germans would disagree with me and call our ÖRR state-run as well, but as far as I can tell, they're fairly independent - both ideologically and structurally. That's because the many broadcasters are mostly autonomous, their finances are largely decoupled from the state (although they're comparable to taxes) and they're controlled by diverse councils, consisting of members who represent not only political parties. There IS some closeness to politics and politicians will try to influence the programme here and there - but on the whole, the system is pretty well organized to keep a healthy distance between any single political power and the programme. So I'd say yes, they're independent, though not fully removed from the political mainstream at any given point.

The CDU being seen as conservative in Germany really shows how far-right the politics here in America are. Angela Merkel would be too left-wing for the Democrats.

    • @LucasBenderChannel
      @LucasBenderChannel 4 дні тому

I think I disagree with that premise. Why would she be considered "too left-wing"? 🤨 And just to keep things straight: Merkel was not considered a Conservative by anyone, even though she was leading the major conservative party. She had always been from the decidedly centrist wing of her party and had to govern in cooperation with a left wing party - moderating her policies yet again. Complicated.

As for her not being a conservative...Eh, fair enough. In the U.S. the president is considered the de facto leader of their party, so a certain level of ideological lockstep tends to happen. Many of the issues they address are legitimate but I really wish they were more willing to take a step back and ask questions like "is this even a problem on our side of the pond" or "does that even make sense in our political, social and linguistic environment" rather than unreflectedly parroting anything they read on English-speaking social media.

Yeah that's what I've observed as well. Although I have heard people interpret that phenomenon in the opposite way as well! For the most part, I don't share that view, but I do get where it comes from.

#tribe 36 Dual citizenship holders my grandparents (oma and opa) are examples. They never will move back as they have become nearly fully americanized but they often will look upon german politics with disgrace telling me how good the american dream is yet they both have not been to germany since 1982. My oma was from Bavaria and she was very anti catholic after coming to the US and my opa was originally from East Prussia but moved to Bremen after ww2 and he's very anti communist and SPD. I've met some of their brothers and sister that have also moved to the US and they feel the same. I feel like no matter what happens in Germany they will support the opposite. Which is odd cause both of them have retained their German citizenship. Which I find hilarious cause i've visited Berlin, Dresden, Munich and rural bavaria for a few weeks and I found many things I think the US should adopt culturally and politically.

19:00 no im not, please tell me what specific beleifs are actaully there. And instead of giving us a reasonable one that has any possible bearing in reality that real people actually believe, you choose the most LUDICROUS and retarded of the bunch to represent the ENTIRE group. So, tell me, what is a "conspiracy theorist" to you?

Kinda weird to lump "extremists" into one big pile as if their opinions or expressions of those opinions are at all similiar

I've seen that criticism a lot and I think it's a fair point. Maybe I should've specified that group as "violent extremists", since that's the only form of expression I was talking about. That said, I think I can defend lumping them together despite their very different ideologies. Afterall, I did the same with the Party Solider for instance, or with every other group for that matter. All of these tribes are not monoliths but offer diversity within them.

The Bürgerinitiative person or "NIMBY ". Usually very locally active, single issue voter who mostly doesn't want a specific thing in their neighbourhood. Can join up to become a major party (Greens or Freie Wähler) or turns into a Wutbürger.

@@jessevandeinsen4202 Yeah .. but since the common liberal "German" doesn't believe in nationhood anymore, it should just be "Federal Citizen" (Bundesbürger or just Bürger). The common German patriotism wich you might find is just based on silly little stereotypes, and being "thankful to live a wealthy democracy"... so there are even immigrants who will identify themselves as "german", but it's just a shallow facade. ... and the Neonazis and Trumpists who see themselves as German patriots are just really dumb, and don't even know their own history in most cases.
